Opening Day(s) Stats
Now that we've got Opening Day(s) out of the way, I thought I'd share some of the stats that jumped out at me.
Thanks to his big fly yesterday, Chone Figgins, is on pace to hit 162 HR's this year. Ok, I know that's ridiculous but he should at least be able to surpass last year's total of 1.
Sticking with the Mariners theme, this is the second year in a row that the M's have scored 5 runs on Opening Day against the A's. King Felix is probably hoping that this year it will mean that they can repeat the feat more often than last year when they only scored more than 4 runs in 6 of Hernandez' starts after Opening Day. The A's, meanwhile, have commited a combined 9 errors on the last 2 Opening Days.
Fausto Carmona managed a bit of history yesterday. He is the first pitcher to give up 10 runs in less than 3 IP on Opening Day. Not exactly a fitting tribute to Indians legend Bob Feller. Feller, who passed away in the offseason and was honored before the game, is the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter on Opening Day.
Neil Walker became the first Pittshburgh Pirate to hit a Grand Slam on Opening Day since Roberto Clemente in 1962. The Pirates have won 5 straight Opening Day games. If only they could keep that momentum going through the rest of the season.
